Hydroponics is growing plants in a water-based, nutrient solution rather than in soil. (The term is derived from the Greek words “water” and “to do work.”) With this growing practice, a plant’s root system comes in direct contact with the nutrient solution, while also having access to oxygen (which is essential for proper growth.) Hydroponic practices can increase the rate of growth in plants up to 25% faster while producing up to 30% more than the same plants grown in soil. Basket Case Farms carefully controls the pH levels and nutrient solutions, allowing the plant to focus on “growing up,” rather than expanding the root system down. The plant’s small root system provides exactly what it needs so it doesn’t have to work as hard to obtain nutrients.
