Happenings at the farm

We are excited to increase our production by expanding our grow operation with additional hydroponic racks, increasing our outdoor grow spaces with customized drip irrigation, an aquaponics system, composting stations, and an apiary hive for our “buzzing” friends!

Come for a tour, learn about our growing practices, and try something at home!

Farm Improvements

Basket Case Farms recently completed a major rehaul of our hydroponic operations, including building several new systems and replacing all hydroponic tubes. The result of these modifications is 16 systems, each containing 56 heads of lettuce. We now have a total of 900 heads of lettuce. The Parris Island and Crisp Mint Romaine lettuce varieties do very well in our systems. In efforts to reduce waste and save energy, we have repurposed old containers and materials. These efforts have allowed us to grow an additional 25 heads of lettuce each month.

Our farm has also incorporated a more Kratky-style of hydroponics, a passive, non-circulating technique for growing plants suspended above a reservoir of nutrient-rich water. This means that no additional inputs of water or nutrients are needed after the initial application, and no electricity, pumps, water, or oxygen circulation systems are required.

Other improvements include the installation of two new, L-shaped, raised garden beds with plans to complete that project with a retractable shade structure. More changes and additions include our 20’ x 96’ hoop house (almost complete) and modifying several raised beds around the perimeter of our growing site. We made irrigation modifications with the installation of an in-ground drip, allowing us to water more efficiently. Our composting efforts continue, and we prioritize efforts to repurpose old materials on-site in all of our areas.
